Data Centers Decoded

Building better conversations around data centers in our communities.

Data center development has never moved faster.

Demand for AI capacity is climbing steeply, and with it comes real opportunity for the places that host these facilities: investment, jobs and tax revenue that fund local services.

It has also brought a wave of public concern, about AI itself and about what the next generation of data centers means for the communities around them. Some of that concern is well-founded. Much of it rests on misconceptions that have gone unchallenged for too long.

Data Centers Decoded takes an honest look at both.

We acknowledge what communities are right to question, separate it from what’s misunderstood, and set out the evidence, so residents, officials, developers and operators can have a better-informed conversation.

Why this matters now

“We live in the communities where we operate. We want to see data centers treated as true community assets, not infrastructure imposed on the people who live there.”

What's inside: five concerns, decoded

We take the concerns communities raise most, test each one against the evidence, and show you what holds up and what doesn’t.

Community impact and land use

"Data centers give nothing back."
In one rural community, a single data center took local tax revenue from $400,000 to $3.5 million in seven months.

See what the evidence says about jobs, tax and who really benefits.

Water usage

"Data centers drain local water supplies."
A data center's biggest water footprint often isn't its cooling at all.

Find out what it is, and how modern sites are changing the picture.

Energy bills and the grid

"Data centers are pushing up household bills."
Energy bills are rising, but the main cost driver started long before the AI boom.

Discover what's really behind it.

Noise pollution and air quality

"Diesel generators run around the clock."
Federal law says otherwise.

Learn what the rules actually allow, and how modern facilities manage sound.

Unchecked growth and hurried infrastructure

"Projects are being rushed through."

Find out how long it really takes before a single shovel hits the ground, and why scrutiny is increasing, not easing.
